Meet Dr. Jason B. Carmel
Please join in welcoming Jason B. Carmel, MD, PhD to our faculty as the Weinberg Family Associate Professor of Neurology (in Orthopedic Surgery). Dr. Carmel is a child neurologist and motor system neuroscientist interested in central nervous system injury and repair. As scientific director of the Weinberg Family Cerebral Palsy Center and director of the Movement Recovery Laboratory, Dr. Carmel oversees a translational research program in which he models repair strategies in animals with brain and spinal cord injury and then uses those results to design better treatments for patients. The main therapeutic approach of the laboratory is electrical stimulation of brain and spinal cord. In the Movement Recovery Clinic through both Orthopedics and Neurology, Dr. Carmel evaluates children and adults with cerebral palsy and other causes. Using advanced diagnostic tools, including brain imaging and genetic evaluation, along with a thorough neurological exam, Dr. Carmel determines the cause and pattern of impaired movement and prescribes restorative treatments. These include physical therapies, medical and surgical options, and research protocols, such as robotic therapy.
